and a shot rang out

Author: will | Filed under: music

Gentle reader,

Just who is Franz Ferdinand?

I mean it. I can’t view the mpeg (bloody setting!).

And “DJ Spinner and Mr. Scruff’s are going to do a US tour”. The headline caught my eye. The tour is to do with the second Verve Remix album ‘Verve / Remixed 2′. This is not “The Verve” of britpop. Verve is (was?) a jazz label, and the first simply updated some old classics (Ms. Washington’s remixed “Is you is or is you ain’t my baby” is my favourite). Mr Scruff has reinvented ‘Do What You Wanna’ by Ramsey Lewis and Felix Da Housecat does a remix of Nina Simone’s ‘Sinnerman’.

My bank account condems you (but I don’t. keep up the good work, and let me get a listen to it)

Somethign that won’t trouble my finances is the news that Mary-Kate and Ashley, the Olsen twins. have signed a deal with Sony music. Why?

take care,

Will

p.s.

It looks like Franken won his case with Fox.

gigs

Author: will | Filed under: music

Gentle listner,

The Lobby bar have posted out their gig guides for this week and September…

So I suppose I have questions to ask….

“August Wed 27th MAJELLA MURPHY Singer/songwriter €8 ”

Is she any good? Anyone?

and the day after….

“Thurs 28th JUUTE Featuring possibly the finest female voice on the Cork

scene in Vickie Frahill and the drumming of Jean Michael Cavello(Cyclefly),

Juute’s melody driven music has been recently captivating listeners of Cork’s

96FM and Red FM following the airing of Scream €7 ”

I actually like these guys. Which probably says a lot about my taste in music…

In fact since I’m no longer able to do the listings guide, I’m just going to comment and ask for comments…

The Lobby in September….

“Sun 14th SAUCY MONKY American Indie Pop band who are making quite a name

here in Ireland. Special guest Naimee Coleman.€7″

OK I’ll admit it. I like Naimee Coleman (I own both of the albums and I’ve now got “love song” playing in my head just thinking of her)

Anyway that the only one that stands out to me…

but

Wed 17th KIERAN HALPIN A welcome return from one of Ireland’s top

singer/songwriters. With Jimmy Faulkner. €8

and

Thurs 18th BRIAN CAREY Dublin born singer/songwriter. €7

and

Sat 20th JOHN LEO CARTER Cork singer/songwriter. €7

and ideas on this trio?

and finally (for the Lobby)

Wed 24th ANN SCOTT + band One of Dublin’s finest musician’s. €7

I’m hearing rumblings but no real comments. Anyone?

Also in September….

MARK GEARY

The Half Moon Theatre, Cork

Wednesday 10th September

Tickets €12 from 021 4270022

Doors 9pm

I don’t know if I like him or not. I mean I have his album (yes Noel I’ll give it back, I haven’t forgotten) but I haven’t listened to it yet (I have a little Ireland on Sunday backlog if you know what I mean). Is he worth is hype? The same question applies to the Thrills.

I guess I’ll have to keep my ears to, well, my CD’s and the radio.

And real live people of course.

I might need a life first…

take care,

Will

Gentle writer,

This is interesting… Beatwax records is updating their lists of “Fanzines” (as opposed to magazines I suppose).

I don’t know if it’s on their site yet, so feel free to contact me with details if you want.

take care,

Will
