Laying down the groundwork

Stone upon stone upon stone. Sometimes you need to move the stones and be patient before you can build the wall.

Gasp for air

Author: will | Filed under: 2008, p4oi, pinkforoctober

My timetable is a little crazy right now, but its nearly October.

And Pink for October is beginning to make its presence felt.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

If you intend to blog about Pink for October, please register at PinkforOctoberIreland.org so that every Irish blogger who wants to raise awareness about breast cancer will be able to see every other blogger who wants to raise awareness about breast cancer.

I have seen a few garbled registrations, so if you have registered before, please register again (I’m the moderator so I’ll see it). If you are having trouble, e-mail me and I’ll add you manually if all else fails.

Take care,
Will Knott

Overheard : Market realities

Author: will | Filed under: What would you do, overheard

“Go outside and look at the building you’re in. The concrete in the foundation hasn’t shattered just because the Dow Jones fell a certain number of points.” — Christopher S. Penn write about not panicking about the economy and about the things that should matter in life.

So what does matter? He writes about music, which I’ve written about, and he writes about family and friends. The concrete reminds me of a little party where I met friends from last weekend which I think went well.

At this moment I’m wondering about a one-off opportunity or going to Podcamp Ireland this weekend. Its an either-or and I’m torn.

Which would you choose?

Overheard : Participating in photography

Author: will | Filed under: overheard, photo

“There isn’t a ‘right’ way of participating in photography, but there are good reasons for encouraging young people to take it up, and to use it to articulate a vision, and not just record a scene. But there is everything to be said for experimentation and originality, and for the idea that art need not be for the elite; it can be everywhere.”

Ferdinand von Prondzynski, President of Dublin City university on photography.

See some of his photographs.

It’s not just for the elite. Words that ought to describe my photography. But I’m trying.

So I’m looking at leading a group around Cork on a photowalk of Cork City on Saturday, and the talk of photographs and photography serves as a reminder.

Starting at 11am on Daunt Square, through the Cornmarket Street / Coal Quay market, across the new bridge and up those Cork steps (Widderings Lane) to St. Annes and the Shandon bells.

Then down (hill) Shandon street and along North and South Main street saying hello to the Cork Vision Centre and then Saint Finbarre’s Cathedral (and maybe Elizabeth Fort).

Then through the side streets to Douglas Street with a view of the Red Abbey and the graffiti paradise of South Parish.

Personally I want to see if its possible to gain access to The Elysium (the Japanese style gardens if not the buildings themsleves) and then work our way along the quays to end up back at Patrick’s Street (and hopefully a chance to sit down at last).  Rumours of finishing at O’Conail’s chocolate shop will be greeted with thumbs up on my part.
Cork Dock Garlic

I did try to work out the route on a Google map, but it seems it can’t handle walking directions through non-drivable streets and lanes.

So will I see you there?

Themes and Anthems

Author: will | Filed under: mashup, music

I found out via Darragh that Raptureponies is asking people what their theme song is?

I don’t really have one.

I have three.

I suppose me ring tone should be a theme, and it follows me around. However I can’t find the right aria form Handel’s Orestes on youTube, so I’ll make do with my message tone. Lovage – Stroker Ace (technically the audio may not be work safe, but it’s all implied). The Munroe samples give you an idea as what to expect.

Next up, is an anthem from my childhood. I came across this purely by accident in a compilation and to be honest I’m surprised it was a hit in the states (number one in the dance chart, if that counts for anything). It never got any radio play over here. Blue Pearl – (Can you) Feel The Passion. I did go hunting for something else by them, and came across the far more dancable Fire of Love – Jungle High Featuring Blue Pearl but I’ll remain loyal to my first brush with a fearsome song.

Some times you just need to sing the blues (amazingly cathartic after a bad day) and I’ve moved from the smooth “Baby Plays Around” to the more heartfelt Its Not Easy Letting go by Candi Staton. That song probably sums up my greatest weakness once I have a working idea (or prototype, or code). I came across this song when I was going music reviews. Just the single meant for radio play. I hunted down the album “His Hands”. Sometimes you feel you are listening to the beating of a broken heart with this collection of songs.

And finally, just to get things a little happier again, I’m giving you one of my beloved mash-ups. Its not an theme or an anthem as such, but the skill involved in mashing up 11 different songs in to a manageable and aurally correct (and political too) track is one heck of a skill. Shall we dance?

Overheard : Risqué Business

Author: will | Filed under: opportunity, overheard

Usually I send wine related idea to the Bubble Brothers (and they can actually use them) but this one is just simply funny, but there might be a niche market for it. And I love the quotes.

“safe is risky, and risky is safe. In this case, risky is also risqué”

“He cracks open some wine, and then you put money in his crack. You get the idea.”

Darren Barefoot on the idea of a Sommelier/Stripper combination

I wanted to do more. I wanted to use the Pink For October meme to generate funds for Cancer Research.

A Pink for October LogoImage via Wikipedia

Maybe next year.

And I set up the Pink for October Ireland with the intention of using it as a hub, to allow the photos to be registered with the models and to display some of the finest shots.

Maybe next year.

But as I said, I registered the site, and I want to use it. Join me.

This year.

The Pink for October Ireland site is now an aggregator site. Register with the site and when you post about Pink For October  using the category p4oi (that’s a letter, a number and two letters) the software will pick it up. I know its working for Wordpress blogs, and I just know I’m going to have fun with Blogger, Typepad, pix.ie, flickr etc. but I’m going to give this a shot. The registration is moderated (by humans too), but the posts are not.

Come on over and register.

Pass it on. If you know someone in Ireland (or from Ireland) who is going to do something for Pink for October on their blog, let them know.

I blame Bansky. He is responsible for stencilled art on City walls.
he is responsible for the pre-stencilled paper and wallpaper paste street art.

Manky

Author: will | Filed under: Cork, Cork City, photo

Are stickers Street art?

I think so. They are the slightly nicer version. In theory its easier to get a wallpapered sketch (or stencilled) work off a wall than paint.
Stickers are harder, tougher glue, more likely to remove paint and plaster than wallpaper paste.

manky

This sticker for the non-existant website Manky.ie (and why Richard Nixon?)

Lets face it Mank.ie has got to be the male counterpoint to Beaut.ie, Does anyone want to help me build it?

Update Sept 12

Sorry, Manky.ie does exist. No idea why id didn’t resolve for me when I tried it. Thanks to Gamma Goblin for correcting me on this one.
